Youth Naturalist Series

Fascination with fire, building forts, getting dirty, climbing trees, exploring your surroundings, creating meals, and a desire to use knives; these are all universal “child’s passions”. At Lime Hollow’s Youth Skills days, children will get a chance to explore and tap into these passions.

Date and Times: Select Saturdays from 9:00am - 3:00pm

Location and Weather: Lime Hollow Nature Center Education Campus (3277 Gracie Rd.) These are drop-off classes and will held rain, snow, or sunshine.

Ages: K-8th

Tuition: Tuition varies based on the class and is determined by the supplies and supervision needed. Become a Lime Hollow member and receive 10% OFF each class! Add to that discount by signing up for more classes at one time. Receive an additional $5 off the classes by registering for each day.

Fire Pottery | Saturday October 19

For hundreds of thousands of years, our ancestors have been crafting art from natural materials. Let's rewind to the Stone Age and unleash our creativity and experiment with pottery. Pots will be fire at the next class on Saturday, November 9th. Can’t make the class, please arrange to pick up your items during the week of November 11-15th.

Learn to harness the magic of fire! Fire is a powerful tool. It calls us to gather around it in community, it provides heat for cooking and for warming our bodies, and it can be used to ward off the peskiest of mosquitos. This class will explore many elements of fire including:

  • Where to find and how to harvesting natural materials regardless of weather conditions

  • Single match fires using no artificial fuels

  • Friction Fire methods including bow drills and ferro rods

  • The best fire structures to use in specific circumstances i.e. cooking vs social situations

  • Proper ways to extinguish your fire when you are finished and more!

Campfire Cooking  | Saturday, January 18

For hundreds of thousands of years, fire has molded and shaped us into the humans we are today, and It did this through the food we cooked. In every living human’s ancestry, someone cooked with fire. Join your ancestors and learn to harness a campfire and to create delicious food using both primitive and modern techniques. The next time you go camping not only will you impress others with your cooking skills, but it will also give you the confidence to know that no matter what the situation is, your palate won’t suffer!

In this class you will be learning:

  • How to build fire structures

  • Tell the temperature of a fire through your tactile sense

  • Cook on coals, stones, and so much more!

  • Build utensils to cook with

  • Make desserts

  • How to utilize different parts and stages of the fire

Tracking and Winter Play  | Saturday, February 1

Have you ever been curious about the critters that live right outside your front door? You may have questions such as who are they? Where do they live? What are they eating? In this class you will be shown how to find those answers on your own by learning to identify animal tracks and sign to help you interpret the natural that surrounds you and finally read the story of the land.

Bushcraft Camp | Saturday, May 17

Journey deep into the wilderness and sharpen your primitive skills in this day of adventure. Collect wild edibles and learn about medicinal plants, track animals, discover their haunts, tie new knots and learn new fire making skills. Try your hand at woodworking, leatherworking, and basketry. Do you have what it takes to survive in the wild?

We aim to make classes available regardless of a family’s ability to pay and have scholarship opportunities available.
