Lime Hollow Opens Nordic Sports Center

Skiing at Lime Hollow CenterLime Hollow is opening its doors as a Nordic Sports Center this winter. Cross-country skis, boots, and poles, and snowshoes will be available for the public to rent.

According to Lime Hollow Executive Director Glenn Reisweber, “Lime Hollow is really fired up about expanding and promoting more Nordic sports offerings at our Nature Center.” Reisweber added, “We have been talking for three years about purchasing equipment and thanks to the Wilkins Foundation of Homer and the Miles Hodson Vernon Foundation of Tarrytown, we are going to make it happen this winter.” Lime Hollow purchased all of its equipment from Cortland’s Action Sports. Matt Belknap, owner of Action Sports commented, “We are really excited about working with Lime Hollow on this project. Lime Hollow is the perfect place to try backcountry skiing or snowshoeing.”

“Our snowshoers can go anywhere,” remarked Peter Harrity, Lime Hollow’s Associate Director. Harrity added, “All ten miles of our trails are accessible to our snowshoers. In fact our more remote areas provide some of the best winter scenery in the Central New York.” For beginner and novice skiers, Lime Hollow recommends staying on the trail network north of the Lehigh Valley Trail. For more advanced skiers, Lime Hollow staff will tailor a course based on a skier’s time available and experience.

Reisweber has seen a dramatic increase in the volume of skiers and snowshoers at Lime Hollow since he became the Executive Director. He maintains that the increase is due to the opening of its new Visitor Center in 2007. He remarked, “Our new rustic log cabin Visitor Center is a welcoming place. Winter sports enthusiasts drop in, share conversation, have a cup of coffee, watch the birds, put on their gear, and journey on our trails.”

Reisweber, who began cross country skiing three years ago, noted that Mother Nature has been very cooperative in providing some of the best skiing and snowshoeing conditions he’s seen at Lime Hollow. And the timing for Lime Hollow’s grand opening is perfect--January is “Learn a Snow Sport Month in New York State.”

Lime Hollow is already looking at improving its trails to support more cross country skiers in 2011 and plans on working with the Cortland YMCA in co-sponsoring a winter race next year.
